Ann L. Rebele has a BFA degree from Ohio State University where she majored in Design.  She has been making fabric art for over 25 years and enjoys creating original hand drawn, hand-painted, hand-dyed, and hand-printed fabrics, using her original photographs, and developing unique three-dimensional effects.  Ann has had five solo art shows at art centers and galleries around Ohio including The Columbus Cultural Arts Center.  Her work has been in numerous national and international juried and invitational exhibitions, including Quilt National 2011; Fiber National; many Best of at The Ohio Craft Museum; The Canton Museum of Art; The Butler Institute of American Art; The Mansfield Art Center; The Indianapolis Art Center; and The Ohio State Faculty Club.  Ann’s solo show at the Dublin Arts Center was selected by the Columbus Dispatch as one of the “Best Visual-Arts Events” of 2006.  She has curated exhibitions, and her art studio has been on the “Worthington Art Council’s - Artist’s Studio Tour”.

I have been working with fabrics and fibers almost all of my life, from sewing as a child, to weaving classes in college, to teaching Adult Education courses in Macramé in the ‘70s.  However, it was my discovery of “Fabric Art” in the late ‘80s, where I could combine my lifetime love of sewing and fabrics with my education in art and design that led to my current passion.

I like to call what I do as “FABRICations” as I create almost all of my own fabrics. Using plain white untreated cotton or sheer silk organza fabrics, I draw on the fabric with fabric inks; paint on them with inks or fabric paints; hand-dye the fabrics; and/or print on the fabric. With printing, I use photographs or images that I scan into my computer, digitally manipulated, sectioned, and then print onto cotton fabrics that I then sewn together. Most of the images are my original photographs.  I often include three-dimensional surface designs in my FABRICations to add texture and interest.  Most recently I have been adding a 4th layer of sheer silk organza material, on which I have drawn and/or painted images. The sheer organza is then layered over a background printed image.  I particularly like experimenting to create innovative designs and techniques.  Once I come up with an idea for a new piece, I enjoy figuring out “how to” create that design in fabric almost as much as the actual construction itself.

I invite you to look beyond the surface.  Look at the pieces from different perspectives, and to see these FABRICations, though using some traditional  sewing techniques, as a unique form of art.
